A tyrant Saudi king dies
And we fly the flags half-mast,
Despite their human rights abuses,
Now and recent past.
Despite their faith extremism,
Intolerance and spite;
Their public executions
And their migrant workers’ plight;
Unpunished mutilations
And the harm of ethnic staff;
Convictions made for ‘sorcery’ –
So nuts you almost laugh.
A place where women have no voice
And aren’t allowed to drive;
An intellectual wilderness
Where only bullies thrive.
They lop off heads in public
For a lengthy list of crimes;
They sever hands of thieves –
And kill them if they steal four times.
Where bloggers get a thousand lashes
And ten years inside
For ‘adopting liberal thought’ –
A sin the Saudis won’t abide.
Allegedly, they fund the terror
Strikes on Western soil;
Yet greedy right-wing Westerners
Keep fawning for their oil
And selling them the weaponry
That Whitehall won’t discuss:
Accepting petrodollars
So their friends can fire on us.
Elitist Tory dickheads
Don’t care where the money’s from,
As long as Arabs come to London –
And they spend a bomb.
It goes to show our government
Can’t speak for decent folk;
Their world-view – like this monarchy —
An obsolescent joke.
Devoid of moral standards,
With an abject lack of shame,
They honour freaky despots
In the British people’s name.
Ill-judged commiserations
Say we tacitly approve,
And endorse a new king promising
That nothing will improve.
Modern Madness
Rhymes Against Humanity
The poem [page_title][/page_title] features in Modern Madness: Rhymes Against Humanity, the debut poetry book by Ross Adamson.
Available in paperback and ebook editions, this storming full-length collection is both a masterclass in skillful, high-octane rhyming verse and a timely, trenchant indictment of early 21st century society.
Modern Madness is smart and streetwise, eloquent and insightful, vehement and rebellious. It buzzes with expressive verve and lyrical charm from the first poem to the last.
Adamson’s emphatic ‘rhymes of the times’ fearlessly tackle emotive topical themes, some sharpshooting a laser-guided dart to the heart of the matter, others detonating a poetic powder keg of righteous anger.
Knowing and noteworthy, this standout collection exemplifies contemporary poetry at its piquant and provocative best. Modern Madness is spirited, quotable, thought-provoking and highly entertaining throughout. Get your copy now!
