The One Percent

Just one percent of people Own half of global wealth. They keep their fortunes tucked away With tax-evading stealth. They stick together, pool their power And keep the rest oppressed. They make damn sure disparities Can never be addressed.

Just one percent of people Hog far more than their share. They look down on the rest of us And don’t pretend to care. They own estates and bask on yachts Far from the swelling slums. They’re feasting in the banquet halls While we all fight for crumbs.

This one percent of people Are winning while we lose. Their stockpiled assets grow in worth; They profit while they snooze. They live a life of luxury Yet thirst for ever more. They’ve rigged the system to their ends And dodged or bought the law.

These millionaires and billionaires, These capitalist kings, They lust for filthy lucre And the privilege it brings. They’ve ring-fenced all resources And locked the treasures down; Monopolised the means to earn, Then milked undue renown.

The politicians of our age Are puppets for the rich. Their worn-out ideologies Don’t scratch the needy’s itch. Their economic paradigm Is running out of gas; It soon must die – or be killed off – As righteous wolves amass.

The other ninety-nine percent Are restless for their due; They yearn for something better, Something moral, something true. The bonfires of inequity Have kindled far and wide. The spread of revolution’s flames Will close the wealth divide.
